Two houses on the same street can get siding quotes $15,000 apart. Wall area is most of the reason, and the material you pick is the rest.
What it costs here, by material
Installed prices published by Long Island Exterior Co. in April 2026:
| Material | Installed, per sq ft |
|---|---|
| Vinyl | $4 to $8 |
| Insulated vinyl | $6 to $10 |
| LP SmartSide | $7 to $12 |
| James Hardie fiber cement | $8 to $14 |
| Cedar shake or wood | $10 to $18 |
On a mid-size Long Island house the gap between materials is real money: Long Island Exterior Co.’s totals put James Hardie at $16,000 to $30,000, close to double what the same house costs in vinyl.
Which material fits
- Vinyl is the least expensive option here and needs the least upkeep.
- Fiber cement (James Hardie is the brand you will hear) costs more, looks closer to painted wood and needs repainting over time.
- Cedar shingles cost the most and need the most care. You see them most out east.
What the quote should say
- the brand and product line, and the color
- whether old siding comes off or the new siding goes over it
- what happens to trim, soffits and fascia
- house wrap: the product, and whether it is included
- how window and door openings are flashed
Do it with the roof, windows or gutters
Many Long Island roofers do siding too. If your windows or gutters are due, pricing them together means one crew and one set of trim work. Add them to the same request.
